# The DA Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate Khathutshelo Rasilingwane says the City is failing to adequately protect women following the recovery of nine dead women. This comes as one of the victims, Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo is laid to rest today at Phake-Ga Rankaila village in Mpumalanga. Rasilingwane said women should not have to live in fear in their communities. She has also called for stronger safety measures and improved policing:

This is also why the GOOD Party leader Patricia de Lille called on communities to break the silence that protects perpetrators of gender-based violence. Speaking at the party’s election manifesto launch in Athlone, Cape Town, De Lille said stronger cooperation between communities and police is needed to tackle GBV. She says residents must work with law enforcement to create safer communities and ensure perpetrators are held accountable. The GOOD Party is campaigning ahead of the November fourth local government elections.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old woman mistakenly identified as the ninth victim in the Ekurhuleni murders is alive. According to Newzroom Afrika, the family of Teballo Monamodi say she returned safely to her Vosloorus home yesterday. It was reported that Monamodi was the victim after her family had identified her at the state mortuary. The ninth body discovered this week now remains unidentified. Police are investigating possible links between the murders and have urged communities to rely on official information.

# The Inkatha Freedom Party is launching its 2026 Local Government Election Manifesto at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, Durban, today. IFP national spokesperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, says the party’s manifesto will set out plans for effective, ethical and accountable municipalities, governance and integrity, the local economy with a focus on practical solutions and service delivery. He says the needs of communities will remain central to its plans:

# Anthropic has quietly set up a biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area as it expands its use of artificial intelligence in life sciences. Reuters reports the company is hiring biologists and biochemists and wants to use AI to investigate rare and neglected diseases. The move comes amid earlier warnings that increasingly powerful AI could pose an existential threat to humanity, including by lowering barriers to dangerous biological research. Anthropic says the lab’s main focus is fundamental biology rather than drug discovery, although it has not ruled out other applications.

# And motorsport: Veteran driver Marcel Angel has died following a serious incident during a race at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town yesterday. Motorsport South Africa confirmed the 62-year-old died while competing in Race 1 of the Extreme SuperCars category at the National Extreme Festival. The remainder of Saturday’s racing programme was cancelled. Angel was a long-standing member of the South African motorsport community, with tributes paid by organisers and Motorsport South Africa. The Extreme Festival organisers have asked that his family’s privacy be respected.
