# A retired California judge acting as an arbitrator has ordered Uber to pay about 652-million-rand to the parents of a 23-year-old woman killed after an Uber driver left her on a freeway. Emily Normandin-Parker was travelling home with a friend after a night out in 2023 when the driver stopped at an unsafe section of highway and made the women leave the vehicle. She was then struck and killed by another car. Uber disputes the finding, saying the arbitrator was wrong to hold the company legally responsible.
