# A South African study linked air pollution to a higher risk of pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis. The study analysed 59-thousand cases of invasive pneumo-coccal disease, a serious bacterial infection that can cause pneumonia, meningitis and blood infections. Thee study was conducted by the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases and other collaborators. The Institute’s Professor Anne von Gottberg says the findings show air quality greatly impacts health and called for improved monitoring in high-risk areas.
