# The DA says the dismissal of Crime Intelligence deputy head Feroz Khan from the Police Service must be the first of many, until all crooked cops are removed. His dismissal was triggered by his failure to face a disciplinary hearing after being accused of misconduct and bringing the service into disrepute. The DA’s Lisa Schickerling says SAPS needs to ensure that other senior officers who have broken the law are held accountable:

# Eskom says it’s making progress in clean coal, green hydrogen and other technologies intended to strengthen operational performance, national energy security and a responsible energy transition. Eskom hosted minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, at its Research, Testing and Development facility in Johannesburg. Spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says it is building the capabilities required to deliver reliable, affordable and competitive electricity over the long term, adding as the electricity sector evolves, innovation is becoming more critical:

# Deputy president Paul Mashatile’s son-in-law, Nceba Nonkwelo, has paid back the 12.6-million-rand he owed to the Gauteng Partnership Fund, as part of a settlement agreement. A series of media reports by News24 claimed Nonkwelo Investments had received loans totalling about 30-million-rand from the GPF between 2013 and 2017 for the construction of student accommodation in Johannesburg, which was never completed. He also funded the purchase of a 37-million-rand house for Mashatile and his wife. Nonkwelo has told News24 this matter has now been resolved.

Moving abroad:

# The World Health Organisation says two new vaccines against the Bundibugyo virus of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo are now in safety trials in the UK and Canada. The official death toll from the DRC’s deadliest-ever Ebola outbreak stands at over three-thousand. The province of Ituri remains the epicentre, accounting for 88-percent of deaths. Another vaccine is being developed by the US-based Moderna group. The WHO says efficacy trials for all three potential vaccines should start in the DRC in October or November.

# Rugby: Springbok hooker Johan Grobbelaar will play for the Bulls until 2030, extending his stay in Pretoria after joining in 2017. He played over 100 matches for the union’s different teams, and ten Tests for South Africa since his debut in 2024. The Bulls say in a statement 30-year-old Grobbelaar is a cornerstone of the forward pack and the extention of his contract reinforces their strategy of retaining world-class talent and core leadership. It says he embodies everything the Bulls stand for.

# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-2-cents and the euro at 18-rand-61-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-63-cents and Bitcoin trades at 78-thousand-74-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-428-dollars-96-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 96-dollars-75-cents a barrel.
