# Musicologist Sheldon Leal says it has been 44 years since the compact disc changed how the world listens to music. Speaking to 702, Leal says that when the compact disc made its debut in 1982, its affordability and durability made it more popular than vinyl and tape, and it was the first time music was encoded using light. He says Gen Z may now be bringing CDs back, as young listeners rebel against streaming and want to own their music again.
