Rail industry urges learners to consider careers in the sector

# Rail industry professionals are encouraging Grade Nine learners, particularly girls, to consider careers across South Africa’s rail sector. Speaking at Traxtion’s Rail Fare 2026 exhibition, four women leaders highlighted opportunities beyond engineering, including finance, operations and human-factor engineering. They encouraged learners to take mathematics and science, seek mentorship and continuously develop their skills. Women currently account for about 26-percent of rail-related jobs in South Africa. Industry leaders are targeting 30-percent to 35-percent female representation by 2030.
