Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA wins major election victory in court
# The National Gambling Board says young people are still excluded from the economy
# And rugby, the All Blacks romp to a massive win over the struggling Bulls
# The DA has welcomed the Pretoria High Court judgement declaring key aspects of ICASA’s election broadcasting regulations unconstitutional and unlawful. The party’s Ashor Sarupen says the Court has granted the relief by creating an urgent mechanism for disputes over rejected political advertisements and party election broadcasts. He says the Court also found it unlawful and unconstitutional to exclude members of the public and public interest organisations from challenging the rejection of political broadcasts:
# The National Gambling Board is calling on government to urgently address the crisis of young people who continue to experience disproportionately high levels of economic exclusion. The Board’s acting CEO, Lungile Dukwana, strongly encourages young South Africans not to view sports betting and other forms of gambling as an alternative pathway to earning an income. He says the organisation’s 2023/24 study on the socio-economic impact of gambling in South Africa reinforces the need for heightened awareness among younger South Africans:
# The Forum for South Africa says unemployment is a social crisis that contributes to poverty, crime, inequality, substance abuse and hopelessness among millions of South Africans. According to StatsSA, the official unemployment rate increased from 32.7-percent in the first quarter of this year to 33.6-percent in the second quarter. Forum leader, Tebogo Mashilompane, is calling on all three spheres of government to move beyond promises and implement practical solutions that will create sustainable employment opportunities:
# North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin have reaffirmed their close ties in messages marking Korea’s Liberation Day. The two leaders exchanged messages on the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945. Their latest communication comes as North Korea and Russia have strengthened political and military cooperation. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, meanwhile, used Liberation Day to call for dialogue with Pyongyang and discussions aimed at formally ending the Korean War and limiting North Korea’s nuclear programme.
# And finally, rugby news:
# The All Blacks have stormed to a massive victory of 50-19 over the Bulls in Pretoria, continuing their unbeaten South African tour. New Zealand produced a dominant performance, running in eight tries against a Bulls side that struggled to contain the visitors’ attacking power. The victory strengthens the All Blacks’ momentum ahead of their highly anticipated four-Test series against the Springboks. New Zealand have now beaten the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls on tour. Their attention will turn to the world champion Springboks, with the opening Test scheduled for August 22 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.
# And, the Pumas have strengthened their Currie Cup title challenge with a convincing 29-7 win over the Stormers-23 in Mbombela. The Pumas led 15-nil at halftime and controlled the second half despite a brief Stormers fightback. Nevaldo Fleurs was influential, kicking accurately and helping set up tries for Thomas Bursey and Banie Britz. Jan-Henning Campher and JJ Scheepers also scored tries for the hosts. The bonus-point victory lifts the Pumas to second on the log, four points behind defending champions Griquas, with two rounds remaining.
