# Rugby: Stormers prop Ntuthuko Mchunu joined the Springbok camp in Johannesburg, apparently over concern over the fitness of experienced number one Ox Nché. Mchunu played his fourth Test for South Africa in the Nations Championship clash with Scotland earlier this month. He was initially released to the Stormers for next Friday’s tour match against the All Blacks. The national team is preparing for next weekend’s one-off Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires and the series against New Zealand.

# Soccer: Defending champions Banyana Banyana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Tanzania in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group B opener in Casablanca, Morocco. Tanzania took the lead through Diana Msewa, but Bambanani Mbane equalised for South Africa at the end of the first half. Hasnath Ubamba secured the winner. Banyana Banyana now has an uphill battle to make the knockouts, with Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso still to come in the group. The four semifinalists will automatically qualify for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

More soccer news: Orlando Pirates dominated the Premier Soccer League Player Awards, after completing a historic domestic treble during the 2025/26 season by winning the Premiership title, the MTN8 Cup, and the Carling Knockout Cup. Relebohile Mofokeng capped a sensational season with Pirates, winning player, players’ player and young player of the season awards. The Buccaneers claimed all the major individual categories, with Abdeslam Ouaddou named coach of the season, and Lebone Seema defender of the season. Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who died earlier this month, posthumously received the Chairman’s Award.

# And tennis: Women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will play the US Open mixed doubles, which starts on August 25th in New York. Last year’s runners-up, Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, have entered along with Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, and the Japanese duo of Naomi Osaka and Kei Nishikori. Six teams with the best combined singles ranking will be automatically entered into the main draw. Eight teams will be given wild cards, and the final two places will be decided through a qualifying tournament.
