# First up is the Commonwealth Games: Wayne Rittmuller got Team South Africa’s campaign off to the perfect start when he won his opening Lawn Bowls men’s singles match in Glasgow. The 44-year-old saw off Singapore’s Harriman Yuen in their Section B encounter. In the women’s pairs of the Lawn Bowls, Thabelo Muvhango and Jacqui Janse van Rensburg lost their Section B match to Paris Baker and Milika Nathan of Tonga. King Charles officially opened the Games yesterday, bringing over three-thousand athletes for eleven days of competition across ten sports.

# Rugby: Springbok scrumhalf Faf de Klerk will again headline the Cheetah’s team when they and the Sharks kick off the weekend’s Currie Cup action in Bloemfontein this evening. The home team started their campaign with a nail-biting victory over the Lions, while the visitors beat the Pumas, also by two points. Tomorrow afternoon, the Lions will welcome the Pumas to Johannesburg, while Griquas and the Blue Bulls will meet in Kimberley. On Sunday, the Cape derby will see neighbours Boland and the Stormers-23 face off in Wellington.

Other rugby, the Junior Springbok Women coach, Hayden Groepes, has made several changes to the side that will take on the USA Women’s Eagles Under20s in the last of their two-match series in Stellenbosch today. The USA won the first match 47-12. Injuries have forced Groepes to make changes, including six to his backline and a new-look back row. Keira Snyman will make her first appearance on the left wing. Groepes says improving squad depth is one of their priorities:

# Cricket: Next year’s Ashes series between England and Australia will see Tests being played at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Lord’s in London, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Southampton, and The Oval in London. The tour starts on 18 June, with Southampton hosting an Ashes Test for the very first time when the fourth encounter starts on the 21st of July. The two countries’ women’s teams will play each other in a one-off Test at Headingley from 24 June, followed by three T20s and three one-day matches.

# And motorsport: Mercedes’ George Russell describes his season, which he started as clear favourite for the world championship title, as an emotional rollercoaster. A battery deployment failure and a collision with Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari at last weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix resulted in his second Did Not Finish. The Briton sits 50 points behind teammate and title rival Kimi Antonelli before this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, but says the championship fight isn’t over:
