# Right-wing candidate, Abelardo de la Espriella, has won the presidential runoff election in Colombia, narrowly defeating left-wing Iván Cepeda. Preliminary results released by the National Civil Registry show the 47-year-old lawyer and businessman has won 49.8-percent of the vote, with Cepeda winning 48.7-percent. De la Espriella, who has been backed by US president Donald Trump, has promised a heavy-handed approach to fighting crime, including drug trafficking. He has also pledged stronger security ties with the US, lower taxes, expanded oil exploration, and economic liberalisation.
