Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# President Ramaphosa says foreigners without proper documentation should not be in South Africa
# The IEC is experiencing high traffic on its website
# And rugby: Rassie includes six uncapped players in his Nations Championship squad
# ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa says all foreign nationals without proper permits and papers documentation should not be in South Africa. Ramaphosa led the ANC’s voter registration drive across the City of Ekurhuleni. March and March movement, along with other organisations, have organised ongoing protests against foreign nationals and demand that all undocumented immigrants must leave the country by 30 June. The president says the government has launched a heavy crackdown on businesses and households that hire undocumented foreign nationals:
Meanwhile, eThekwini mayor, Cyril Xaba, says the South African government has made available 20 buses to expedite the repatriation of Malawian foreign nationals from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal to their home country. He says to date, close to four-thousand people have been deported or repatriated. The mayor says the Drive-Inn site will serve as a temporary staging area to help fast-track the deportation and repatriation process, while the Sherwood site will remain operational:
# The Electoral Commission is currently experiencing high traffic on its website as thousands of South Africans access voter registration services this weekend. IEC’s Masego Shiburi says this may result in the system being slower than usual. However, he says the commission technical teams are actively working to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. Shiburi says all young South Africans are encouraged to keep the momentum going by registering to vote and ensuring their voices are heard:
# A heatwave sweeping across much of Europe prompted a partial alcohol ban in France, nationwide warnings in Germany, and the closure of a soccer fan zone in Spain, as temperatures climbed towards record levels. France was expecting red heatwave alerts on Sunday with temperatures of 39 to 40 degrees Celsius from the southwest through the Paris region into Burgundy, with some areas possibly reaching 41 degrees. Heat alerts were also declared in most of Germany. Scientists say climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and intense across Europe, raising the risk of disruption during the summer months.
# And rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus on Saturday evening named a 46-man squad featuring six uncapped players and 12 returning Bulls players for the inaugural Nations Championship, which kicks off against England in Johannesburg on Saturday, 4 July. The squad includes 28 forwards and 18 backline players, with Paul de Villiers, Riley Norton, Ruben van Heerden, Carlu Sadie, Vusi Moyo, and Jaco Williams the uncapped players in the mostly experienced group.
The match against England will be followed by clashes against Scotland in Pretoria on 11 July and Wales in Durban on 18 July, before the Boks travel to Buenos Aires to play a one-off test against Los Pumas on 8 August. The squad will arrive in Johannesburg today to resume their training camp.
