Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with soccer: Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says they cannot underestimate South Korea in their must-win final World Cup Group A match next Thursday. Co-hosts Mexico are through to the last 32, while South Korea currently occupies second spot in the group on three points, with the Czech Republic and South Africa both on one point. Broos has highlighted South Korea’s structured play as a key challenge:
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says the Stormers showed the Bulls how to beat Leinster at home after losing the United Rugby Championship semifinal against the Irish team. The Bulls and Leinster face off in the final in Dublin tonight. Erasmus says the Stormers did South Africa proud despite losing, pointing out ill-discipline cost them dearly and they were without several injured star players. He expects the hosts to be a tough ask, but backs the Bulls to do one better than the Stormers.
More rugby: Barbarians coach Scott Robertson says facing the world champion Springboks on home soil is a special opportunity for his invitational side. They will clash in Gqeberha tomorrow as South Africa kicks off its season. The former All Blacks coach has assembled a match-day squad featuring 23 players from 12 different nations, including TJ Perenara, Virimi Vakatawa, and Miracle Fai’ilagi. Robertson says the quality and diversity of his squad is something special:
# Cricket: South Africa’s Women realise they have to be on top of their game in Sunday’s T20 World Cup match against India in Manchester, England. The Proteas’ loss to Australia in their first match put them under pressure as only the top-two teams in the two groups advance to the semifinals. South Africa squandered a brilliant start against Pakistan on Wednesday before scraping through with a two-wicket victory. Batter Annerie Dercksen admits they will have to figure out what they did wrong before facing the strong Indian side.
# And motorsport: Mercedes has withdrawn its right of review request over the results of the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix. George Russell received a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane and was then handed a drive-through penalty for failing to serve his five-second time penalty correctly at a pit stop. This resulted in him dropping to 12th when he was on course for a likely podium. Mercedes’ review was based on Alpine successfully overturning Pierre Gasly’s Monaco penalties, which saw him reinstated to third place.
