# Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, says the intimidation of migrants, looting of businesses and destruction of property are reprehensible acts of vigilantism. This comes as anti-immigrant protests in the country have triggered diplomatic tensions, with several countries repatriating their citizens from South Africa. He addressed the 19th Conference of the Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth, Africa Region in Johannesburg yesterday. Lamola emphasised that intimidation of migrants risks tearing apart the country’s relationship with the continent and the world:
Meanwhile, the Departments of Home Affairs, Justice and Constitutional Development have established a Virtual Priority Court in Durban to expedite the processing of immigration matters and deportation orders. Initial operations of this virtual platform are heavily focused on resolving cases involving over one-thousand Malawian nationals who have been sheltering at Sherwood Park in Durban. Home Affairs’ deputy director-general for Operations, Thulani Mavuso, says some Malawians have been found to have contravened South Africa’s immigration laws:
# The South African Communist Party says government and society as a whole must place youth development at the centre of national transformation. It says this requires expanded public investment in education and training, industrial development, community-based enterprises, co-operatives, agriculture, the digital economy and public employment programmes. The SACP says South Africa needs a youth that is conscious, disciplined, skilled, compassionate and rooted in the needs of the people. It adds that young people must take up the task of rebuilding communities and defending democracy.
# A Russian warship fired warning shots at a UK-registered yacht in the English Channel yesterday. Retired British couple, Jane and Alan Kelvey, were sailing the yacht named Bright Future at the time of the incident. Russia’s Defence Ministry says the yacht had been on a dangerous approach towards the warship. This comes after Royal Marine Commandos intercepted a Russian shadow fleet tanker carrying sanctioned oil in the Channel on Sunday. UK Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge says this incident shows that Russia poses a direct threat to the country.
# Soccer: Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0 in their World Cup opener in Kansas City. The 38-year-old is now level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose in scoring the most goals at World Cup finals. In New Jersey, two-time champions France opened their campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Senegal. Captain Kylian Mbappe scored two goals, becoming France’s all-time leading scorer with 58 goals. In Boston, Norway defeated Iraq 4-1 with Erling Haaland scoring twice on his World Cup debut.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-18-cents and the euro at 18-rand-79-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-73-cents, and Bitcoin trades at 65-thousand-780-dollars.
