Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Information Regulator orders the Gauteng Health Department to release the Tembisa Hospital records
# Stats SA says strong growth in platinum boosts the mining output
# And cricket: A defeat for the Proteas Women in T20 World Cup opener against Australia
# The Gauteng Department of Health has been ordered by the Information Regulator to hand over records and audit reports linked to the alleged 2.3-billion-rand procurement scandal at Tembisa Hospital. The ruling followed a legal application by News24 seeking access to documents, including contracts and payments. The statutory data protection and access watchdog has given the hospital ten working days, or face criminal prosecution. The matter has drawn significant public attention amid allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and the death of whistleblower Babita Deokaran.
# The National Treasury has extended the public comment period for the draft General Public Procurement Regulations 2026 to 15 July. The regulations were published for comment in April to support the implementation of the Public Procurement Act of 2024. Treasury says the extension follows requests from stakeholders and recognises the complexity of the proposed regulations. The Act, signed into law by president Cyril Ramaphosa, aims to establish a single framework for public procurement. Treasury has encouraged the public to use the additional time to provide input.
# DA leader and Cape Town mayoral candidate Geordin Hill-Lewis says the City of Cape Town plans to establish its own Metro Police Detective Unit to strengthen crime-fighting efforts. Speaking during his re-election campaign launch, Hill-Lewis argued that many communities are being failed due to under-resourcing, poor leadership, and corruption. He says the proposed unit would investigate cases independently and help ensure successful convictions of criminals:
# Statistics South Africa says mining production increased by 8.2-percent in April compared with the same period last year. The growth was driven mainly by strong performance in platinum group metals, manganese ore, and chromium ore. However, coal production declined and weighed on overall output. Stats SA’s Juan-Pierre Terblanche also reports mineral sales surged by 30-percent compared with the same period last year, supported by higher prices and stronger production in key commodities:
# And finally sports news:
# Cricket: Phoebe Litchfield’s half-century and the Australian spinners handed South Africa a damaging 65-run defeat in their opening Group 1 T20 World Cup encounter at Old Trafford in Manchester yesterday. Litchfield struck a quick 50 from 24 balls with nine fours and a six as Australia posted 172-8 after Sophie Molineux had won the toss and elected to bat first. In reply, the Proteas Women were completely outdone and dismantled for just 107 in 16.4 overs. South Africa’s next group match is against Pakistan on Wednesday evening at Edgbaston.
# And soccer: Switzerland were held 1-1 by Qatar in their 2026 FIFA World Cup clash at the San Francisco Bay Arena Stadium last night. The Red Cross team looked like they were going to win the game, but in the last minute, Qatari Boualem Khoukhi headed home a dramatic equaliser. The result leaves all four teams in Group B level on one point each following co-hosts Canada drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday. In Group C, Morocco and Brazil drew 1-all, while Scotland beat Haiti 1- 0.
