Tennis: Leading tennis players have welcomed the 20-percent increase in Wimbledon prize money as a genuine and significant step forward. The total prize fund at this year’s championships will be 64.2-million British pounds, or equal to about 1.4-billion in South African rand. The singles’ champions will each take home 3.6-million pounds with first-round losers paid 80-thousand pounds. More than 6-million pounds has been set aside for the qualifying competition – an increase of 25-percent. Players have longed argued they play a signifcant role in the success of tournaments.
