# A leadership row erupts in Johannesburg as Morero attacks Mashaba
# Hong Kong charges seven people and two companies over a deadly fire that killed 168 people
# And hockey: South Africa is fired up for the opening of the FIH Men’s Nations Cup
# Executive mayor of Johannesburg Dada Morero blames former mayor Herman Mashaba for what he describes as weak leadership that contributed to ongoing governance and service delivery challenges in the city. Morero argues decisions taken during Mashaba’s tenure left lasting administrative instability and weakened systems. The remarks have intensified political tensions in the metro, with opposition parties rejecting the claims. They insist the current administration must take responsibility for resolving the city’s ongoing service delivery crisis.
# Union GIWUSA is concerned that manufacturing has declined by 0.8-percent in the first quarter of this year. Union president Mametlwe Sebei says every percentage point decline in manufacturing translates directly into job losses across supply chains, transport, wholesale trade, maintenance, security, cleaning, and catering. He says the 0.8-percent decline in a single quarter, sustained over years, has already eliminated hundreds of thousands of industrial jobs:
# Union federation COSATU has welcomed the launch of Eskom Green. The dedicated renewable energy business is designed to accelerate the development of utility-scale renewable energy projects. Spokesperson Matthew Parks says COSATU however remains deeply opposed to any unbundling of Eskom as this threatens its ability to provide energy security. He says Eskom’s entry into the renewable energy sector is crucial, but should not simply be to the advantage of the private sector:
Moving abroad:
# Hong Kong authorities charged seven people and two companies with offenses including manslaughter and conspiracy over the city’s deadliest fire in decades in November last year. The blaze engulfed seven apartment buildings and killed 168 people. Relatives of the victims have been waiting for answers since after the fire shattered the close-knit community of Wang Fuk Court, which housed thousands of people in the suburban district of Tai Po. An independent enquiry revealed almost all fire safety systems failed because of human error.
# Hockey: South Africa wants to fully use home advantage in tomorrow’s opening match of the FIH Men’s Nations Cup against France in Cape Town. South Africa won the inaugural tournament four years ago, but since then, New Zealand have dominated, claiming back-to-back crowns. Nine teams will battle it out for a place in the FIH Pro League. SA captain Dayaan Cassiem says the approach is to take it game-by-game:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-55-cents and the euro at 19-rand-13-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-17-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-264-dollars.
