Western Cape University study reveals over 50% of Cape Town firefighters report breathing problems

# A new study by the University of the Western Cape has found that more than half of Cape Town firefighters report respiratory problems linked to repeated smoke exposure. The study of 278 firefighters found coughing and nasal congestion were the most common symptoms, although nearly 98-percent still had normal lung function. The study also found that smoking and longer years of service were linked to poorer lung health. Researchers are calling for regular health checks and fitness programmes for firefighters.
