Tshwane council approves key step towards formalisation of Refilwe Extension 5 informal settlement

# The City of Tshwane council has approved a request by the Department of Human Settlements to issue a Power of Attorney for various land-use applications. This is required to formalise the existing Refilwe Extension 5 Informal Settlement. The applications may include rezoning, subdivision, township establishment, and removal of restrictive title conditions. The department says it intends to formalise the Refilwe settlement, which covers 12.8 hectares, as part of the metro’s broader programme to provide secure tenure, improve living conditions and ensure sustainable human settlements.
