# Over 12 months between July 2024 and June 2025, the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Service responded to five-thousand-392 incidents on the highways. Half of the incidents were stationary vehicles, just over 30-percent were crashes involving vehicles, pedestrians and animals, and the rest were a combination of incidents, including protest action, crime, fires, and flooding. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says the Traffic Service’s Highway Patrol Unit, active since November 2022, has responded to 67-percent of incidents on the highways:
