South Africa marks 30 years of constitutional democracy

# Today marks 30 years since the adoption of South Africa’s Constitution by the Constitutional Assembly in 1996 and later signed into law by former president Nelson Mandela. The milestone celebrates the country’s transition from apartheid to a constitutional democracy based on human rights, equality, and the rule of law. The Constitution remains the foundation of governance in the country. Government is reflecting on progress made, while also acknowledging ongoing challenges such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment.
