SAFTU says education struggle continues 50 years after Soweto uprising

# The South African Federation of Trade Unions says the fight for quality and equal education remains unfinished, 50-years after the historic Soweto Uprising. Commemorating the 16 June 1976 protests against Bantu Education, SAFTU has honoured the students whose actions helped shape South Africa’s liberation struggle. While acknowledging improved access to education since democracy, the federation says deep inequalities persist across the sector. SAFTU argues that austerity measures have undermined efforts to address infrastructure backlogs and strengthen the country’s public education system.
