# The teachers Union, Sadtu says the independent educational institutions schools must remain accountable to the state, learners, and parents. This comes after a rape incident of a seven-year-old Grade 1 learner at Bergville College in Matatiele, in the Eastern Cape in October last year. Sadtu’s spokesperson, Nomusa Cembi says the employment of teachers and staff at private institutions should align with public schools’ policies including mandatory vetting against the National Register of Sex Offenders:
