Road Agency warns of severe structural damage beneath M2 bridges amid illegal mining and tunnelling

# The Joburg Roads Agency says Johannesburg’s M2 highway could be at risk after illegal mining, tunnelling, erosion and vandalism caused serious damage to infrastructure beneath the road. The agency says parts of the M1 and M2 have weakened, including bridge supports, embankments and paving in areas such as Booysens and Heidelberg Road. It’s working with metro police to monitor hotspots and carry out urgent maintenance, while longer-term repairs are being planned to stabilise and protect the highway network.
