Researcher warns PEPFAR funding freeze threatens HIV fight in South Africa

# University of Cape Town’s research expert Linda-Gail Bekker has warn that the freeze on the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funding could lead to 601-thousand HIV-related deaths and 501-thousand new infections in South Africa over the next decade. Bekker highlights that the funds assisted in 18-percent of South Africa’s HIV response, supporting healthcare workers and outreach programmes. She urges swift action, proposing a five-point plan to mitigate the impact and sustain HIV treatment and prevention efforts.
