# The National Union of Mineworkers National Health and Safety Committee is calling on the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources and other stakeholders to urgently intensify efforts to eliminate workplace fatalities and injuries. The country has recorded 33 mine fatalities, 23 in construction and two in the energy sector so far this year. NUM’s Masibulele Naki says it is concerning that major mining houses are retreating from structured safety engagements by abandoning Tripartite Health and Safety Forums:
