Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# Paralympic Games: Swimmer Kat Swanepoel and sprinter Mpumelelo Mhlongo will be Team South Africa’s flagbearers during tonight’s opening ceremony in Paris. Both are regarded as medal contenders. Swanepoel won gold and silver at last year’s World Para Swimming Championships in Manchester. The Games started as an informal gathering for British World War Two veterans during the Olympic Games in London in 1948, and grew into one of the world’s biggest sports events. The opening ceremony will include a parade down the world-famous Champs-Élysées.
# Athletics: South Africans Bradley Nkoana and Bayanda Walaza are through to the men’s 100-metre final at the World Athletics Under 20 Championships in Lima, Peru. Thailand’s Puripol Bonsoon edged out Nkoana by one-thousandth of a second in their semifinal. Walaza recovered from an early stumble to win the third semifinal in 10.33-seconds ahead of Britain’s Teddy Wilson. Nkoana and Walaza were both part of the four-by-100-metre relay team that won silver at the Paris Olympic Games earlier this month.
# Rugby: Eben Etzebeth could still play for the Springboks in Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks at Ellis Park, despite being omitted from the match-day squad because of a knee niggle. Pieter-Steph du Toit was named number 4 lock and will pair with Ruan Nortjé. But head coach Rassie Erasmus says Etzebeth, a veteran of 124 Tests, did a whole training session on Monday and could play in place of one of the substitute loose forwards, namely Kwagga Smith, Marco van Staden and Elrigh Louw.
# Cricket: The West Indies beat South Africa by eight wickets in the final T20 in Trinidad, to complete a three-nil series sweep. It was a disappointing performance from the Proteas, who reached the final of the T20 world Cup in the West Indies in June. They will now return home ahead of a busy schedule of matches at home during the summer. Proteas white-ball coach Rob Walter says they were outplayed:
# And tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy recovered from a set down to beat American Mackenzie McDonald in four sets to make the US Open’s second round. Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz earned his 60th major match win, defeating Australian qualifier Li Tu in four sets. Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered an early exit for the seventh year in a row as he lost to Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round. In the women’s draw, former champion Emma Raducanu of Britain lost in three sets to American Sofia Kenin.
