Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler has won the Masters for a second time in three years at Augusta National. The 27-year-old American hit a four-under 68 in the final round to finish four clear on eleven under, becoming the fourth-youngest player to win the Masters multiple times. On his major debut, Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg finished runner-up. England’s Tommy Fleetwood finished in a share of third with Americans Max Homa and Collin Morikawa. Scheffler says this win is special:
# Tennis: Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and Norway’s Casper Ruud made big strides in the world rankings after reaching the final of the Monte Carlo Masters. Champion Tsitsipas improved five positions to seventh, and Ruud four positions to sixth. Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Italian Jannik Sinner are still in the top two positions, with Carlos Alcaraz of Spain still third, followed by Russian Daniil Medvedev and German Alexander Zverev. Tsitsipas praised Ruud after beating him in straight sets:
Meanwhile, Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Barcelona Open due to injury. The defending champion is still struggling with a right arm injury that also saw him miss the Monte Carlo Masters. Alcaraz won the Barcelona Open in 2022 and last year. His compatriot Rafael Nadal, who has won the tournament a record 12 times, remains in the draw, where he is set to play Italian Flavio Cobolli in the opening round tomorrow.
# Motorsport: Spain’s Maverick Vinales of Aprilia Racing made history by winning the Grand Prix of the Americas MotoGP in Texas. He dropped to eleventh from pole on the opening lap but fought his way back to become the first rider in the modern era to win with three different manufacturers. Teenage rookie Pedro Acosta of Spain finished second and Italy’s Enea Bastianini third. South Africa’s Brad Binder finished ninth. Vinales says he is happy to win a race after three years:
# And finally, Olympics: The Olympic flame is being lit in Greece today before the start of its journey to France for this year’s Games in Paris. The flame will be lit at the birthplace of the ancient Games, Olympia, and carried to several tourist destinations in Greece. It will be handed to the organisers of the Games at the site of the first modern Games in Athens in 1896 next Friday, and then taken on board a 19th Century vessel for the journey to France.
