Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: The T20 series between the Proteas women and Sri Lanka will be decided at Buffalo Park in East London tonight. After the Proteas won the opening game in Benoni by 79-runs, the visitors levelled the series with an impressive seven-wicket victory in Potchefstroom. Pace bowler Tumi Sekhukhune says the Proteas must win their home series:
# Rugby: Springbok Sevens playmaker Dewald Human is back from injury for this weekend’s tournament in Hong Kong. The Blitzboks will face Ireland, Spain and Samoa in Pool C. With tournaments in Hong Kong and Singapore left, South Africa find themselves in seventh place on the log, with the top eight sides qualifying for the winner-takes-all final tournament in Madrid. Human says he’s ready to help and make a difference:
More rugby news: The most experienced All Black of all times, Sam Whitelock, will retire at the end of the current French club season in June. The veteran of 153 Tests joined French top 14 club Pau after last year’s World Cup when his country lost to the Springboks in the final. The 35-year-old lock won 11 Tri Nations and Rugby Championship titles with New Zealand, and represented the Crusaders in 180 Super matches, winning seven titles. The All Blacks describe Whitelock as a legend of the game.
# Motorsport: Mercedes says there are no major concerns over its car’s reliability. A double did-not-finish in Australia last time out left the Formula One team fourth in the constructors’ standings and 72 points behind Red Bull, with Ferrari only four points back from the leaders. Mercedes’s technical director, James Allison, says all the focus is on extracting more performance from the car:
# And finally, swimming: Three-time Olympic champion Adam Peaty has secured his place at the Paris Olympics when he won the 100-metre breaststroke at the British Championships in London. The 29-year-old touched the wall in 57.94 seconds, his quickest time since he defended his Olympic title in Tokyo in 2021. Peaty, who is continuing a comeback after taking time out to look after his mental health, says he is finding peace in the water now instead of anger and frustration:
