Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we have cricket: Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortjé says he is excited about the prospect of wearing the Test cap again. The 32-year-old, who last played a Test in 2023, is in South Africa’s 18-player preliminary squad for the three-match World Test Championship series against Australia. Nortjé says he has been preparing for a possible recall, admitting that he has been focused on executing his skills with the red ball, building loads gradually, and getting the overs up. The first Test starts at Kingsmead in Durban on Friday.
# Rugby: The Springbok Women produced a dominant performance to defeat Spain 20-0 in their final W-15 Global Series tour of Europe in Seville. South Africa led 10-0 at halftime and ran in three tries through Catha Jacobs, Aseza Hele, and Jakkie Cilliers in hot conditions to secure their seventh successive victory over the Spaniards. Franzel September, who shares the head coaching responsibilities with Laurian Johannes-Haupt, says they are particularly happy with the way they managed to kill the flow of the Spanish team:
# Golf: Poland’s Adrian Meronk fought from four shots behind to overtake South African Casey Jarvis and win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. The 33-year-old finished on four-under 68 to claim his fifth DP World Tour title and regain his tour card for next season. Jarvis, who posted a final round 72, finished tied for second with Denmark’s Niklas Nørgaard. World number 979 Michael Stewart of Scotland placed tied for fourth with England’s Tommy Fleetwood, at 16-under. Last year’s champion, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, finished tied for sixth place.
# Tennis: Twenty-four-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic’s bid for a record-extending seventh China Open title is still intact after defeating top seed Germany’s Alexander Zverev to reach the semifinals. The Serb is 32-0 in Beijing, the best start in men’s singles at a tour-level event in the Open Era. He will face Russia’s Daniil Medvedev next. Australia’s Alex de Minaur and Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz will contest the other semifinal. Djokovic says these are the kind of moments he still plays for:
# And lastly, motorsport: Max Verstappen claimed his and Red Bull’s first victory of the season in a chaotic Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia that had torrential rain, a lengthy race-start delay and safety cars. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, who finished second, extended his drivers’ championship lead over his teammate George Russell to 84 points after an engine fault forced the Briton out with five laps to go. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished third, with his teammate Charles Leclerc in fourth and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar rounding off the top five.
