Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: The Proteas defeated Australia by 32 runs in the second one-day match at the Wanderers in Johannesburg to clinch the series with one match left to play. Captain Temba Bavuma and David Miller scored 103 and 142 respectively and added 156 for the fourth wicket as South Africa posted 365 for nine. In reply, a 130-run opening partnership between Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh was not enough as Australia was bowled out for 333. The series concludes in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, followed by three Tests.
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has refused to make excuses for their 42-38 defeat to the Wallabies in Perth yesterday. The Boks trailed 42-17 after 63 minutes before a late fightback brought them within four points. However, this was not enough, despite Australia losing four players to yellow cards inside the final eleven minutes. Erasmus, who made 13 changes for this one-off Test, says they put themselves in a position from which they ultimately could not recover:
# Soccer: South Africa’s Under-20 men’s side retained their COSAFA Under-20 Championship title after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Mozambique. Amajita got the breakthrough in the 27th minute when Oarabile Booysen found the back of the net, but Mozambique equalised two minutes later through Martinho Começar’s goal. In the second half, South Africa won a penalty which the tournament’s top goal scorer, Steven Mendes, converted to secure victory. Amajita has also secured qualification for theUnder-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
# Swimming: Several swimmers achieved B qualifying times at the South African short course championships, which means they can still be selected for the World Short Course Championships in Beijing, China, in December. There were three B qualifiers in the men’s 100 metres freestyle, with Guy Brooks taking the title in 47.59 seconds, ahead of Armand Coetzee and Kaydn Naidoo. Matthew Caldwell won the men’s one-thousand-500 metres freestyle in a B qualifying time of 15-minutes-13.33 seconds, while Georgia Nel is also in the qualifying mix in the 100 metres individual medley.
# And tennis: Team Europe clinched their sixth Laver Cup when beating Team World 13-5 at London’s O2 Arena. Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik put Europe within touching distance of the trophy yesterday with victory over Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz. Two-time Grand Slam champion Alexander Zverev then beat Learner Tien to lead Team Europe to victory. The triumph marks Yannick Noah’s first Laver Cup title as Team Europe’s captain, having fallen short against Andre Agassi’s Team World in San Francisco last year.
