# We start off with rugby: Springbok Sevens coach Philip Snyman says he is extremely proud of his team and how they performed throughout the season. The Blitzboks followed up their World Sevens Series triumph by successfully defending their World Championship title. Tristan Leyds won the Men’s Sevens Player of the Year award, while he and teammate Shilton van Wyk also made the season’s Dream Team. Snyman says the team is moving in the right direction:
Fifteen-man rugby: Springbok assistant coach Tony Brown has signed a two-year contract with New Zealand from 2028. He played 18 Tests for the All Blacks between 1999 and 2001. Brown’s contract with the Boks ends after next year’s World Cup in Australia. Dave Rennie and the rest of his All Blacks coaching staff are currently only contracted until the tournament. New Zealand Rugby CEO Steve Lancaster says Brown is a world-class coach:
# Tennis: Italian Flavio Cobolli has cracked the men’s top ten for the first time after reaching the French Open final. He improved four places to tenth in the world rankings after losing to third-ranked Alexander Zverev of Germany at Roland Garros yesterday. Jannik Sinner of Italy and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz remain on top. Former number one, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, slumped three places to seventh. Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime is fourth, American Ben Shelton fifth, Australian Alex de Minaur sixth, Russian Daniil Medvedev eighth, and American Taylor Fritz ninth.
More news from the French Open: Poland’s Maja Chwalinska shot up an incredible 93 world ranking places to 21st after reaching the final. The 24-year-old became the first qualifier ever to play in the title match at Roland Garros. She lost in straight sets to Russian Mirra Andreeva, who improved from eighth to sixth position. Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus remains world number one, followed by Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and another Polish player, Iga Swiatek. Americans Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova complete the top-five.
# And motorsport: Nineteen-year-old Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli produced a dominant drive to win a chaotic Monaco Grand Prix, his fifth consecutive victory. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished second with Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar third. Antonelli leads Hamilton by 66 points in the drivers’ championship, with his teammate George Russell now down to third after finishing 13th. Antonelli is happy with the car’s overall performance the whole weekend:
