Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: The final two T20s between the Proteas Women and India won’t have any bearing on the series after South Africa won the third encounter in Johannesburg last night. Captain Laura Wolvaardt scored her 17th career century to guide the hostesses to a nine-wicket victory. Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored 66 to help the visitors post 192 for four. Wolvaardt scored 115 off just 53 balls and shared an opening partnership of 183 with Suné Luus. South Africa reached the winning target with 21 balls to spare.
# Rugby: A huge battle is expected in Saturday’s meeting between the top-two teams on the United Rugby Championship log, Glasgow Warriors and the Stormers, in Cape Town. The Scottish outfit has only a four-point lead on the home team before the last three group matches, with home quarterfinals on offer. The Stormers lost to Connacht last weekend while Glasgow went down 54-12 to the Lions at Ellis Park. Stormers’ attacking coach Dawie Snyman says the result was more due to the Lions’ quality than any weaknesses in Glasgow.
# Golf: PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp says they will consider additional pathways to bring back LIV Golf League players who might want to return to the circuit. This follows reports that LIV Golf could lose its financial backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Five-time major winner Brooks Koepka left LIV and returned to the PGA Tour in January, under the returning member programme. 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed is expected to rejoin the tour in August. Rolapp says he is interested in whatever makes the PGA Tour better.
# Soccer: Co-host Mexico gave the assurance World Cup visitors will be safe following a shooting at the historic Teotihuacan Pyramids which claimed the life of a Canadian woman. Thirteen people were injured when the attacker, reportedly being influenced by violent incidents abroad, opened fire before killing himself. Authorities tightened safety measures at tourist sites afterwards. President Claudia Sheinbaum guaranteed visitors’ safety during the tournament, with the first local match in Mexico City on 11 June.
And a top envoy to US president Donald Trump has asked FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Italy suffered defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the qualifying play-off final last month, missing out on the tournament for the third consecutive time. Paolo Zampolli told the Financial Times as an Italian native, it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. He added Italy has the pedigree to justify inclusion.
