# Double Olympic champion, Caster Semenya, has criticised the International Olympic Committee’s reinstatement of gender verification tests for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, labelling them as a disrespect for women. Last week’s decision in effect bans transgender athletes and a large number of intersex athletes from women’s sports. Semenya told Sky News it is disappointing that women need to prove that they are worthy to take part in sports:
# Rugby: The Springbok Women’s Sevens finished the final World Sevens 2 tournament in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in fifth place. On Saturday, South Africa suffered a 19-5 defeat against Spain and a 14-5 loss to Kenya before bouncing back to beat hosts Brazil 26-12. On Sunday, a depleted Bok Women’s side, with five injured players out, suffered a 19-5 defeat to Argentina and won their final match against China 14-10. South Africa has already secured a place in the Sevens World Championship Series, which begins in Hong Kong in April.
# Golf: South Africa’s Martin Vorster won the DNi Tour Championship at the De Zalze Golf Club in the Western Cape for his maiden Sunshine Tour title. He closed with a 66 to win on 21 under par, with compatriots Altin van der Merwe and Jaco Prinsloo sharing second place on 19 under. This was the final tournament of the Courier Guy Playoffs to mark the end of the Sunshine Tour season. Vorster says finally getting over the line is really special:
# Cricket: Mumbai Indians got their Indian Premier League campaign off to a winning start, beating Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets. Captain Ajinkya Rahane scored 67 as he powered Knight Riders to 220 for four in their 20 overs, while Shardul Thakur took three wickets. In reply, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton hammered a 148-run opening partnership to set Mumbai up for a comfortable victory with five balls to spare, and also snapped a 14-year streak of losing their season-opening fixture.
# And tennis: World number two Jannik Sinner won the Miami Open to complete the Sunshine Double for the first time in his career, which means winning Indian Wells and Miami in the same year. The Italian defeated the Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-4, becoming the first man to complete the Sunshine Double since Roger Federer in 2017, and the eighth man ever to achieve the feat.
