Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: The Proteas have qualified for the semifinals of the T20 World Cup following their nine-wicket victory over the West Indies in Ahmedabad, coupled with defending champions India beating Zimbabwe by 72 runs in Chennai. The Proteas will now hope to extend their 100-percent record by beating Zimbabwe in their final Super Eights fixture in Delhi on Sunday. Captain Aiden Markram says they are not taking anything for granted:
More cricket news: Former Proteas star Imran Tahir is returning to the Durban-based Dolphins today when they begin their CSA One Day Cup title defence against the Warriors in Gqeberha. The 46-year-old last represented the Dolphins in 2020 and will add important experience to the team, who will lose seven players to the Proteas squad for their tour of New Zealand. Dolphins coach Quinton Friend says with a 50-over World Cup coming to South Africa next year, he believes the relevance of the domestic 50-over competition could not be higher.
# Rugby: The Sharks’ Springbok winger, Edwill van der Merwe, says they realise they should improve their aerial contest after struggling in that division against the Lions last weekend. The Durban team lost the United Rugby Championship match 34-22, and face the Bulls at Loftus tomorrow. Van der Merwe says they were very disappointed with the result at Ellis Park, but believe they can do better in Pretoria. A bonus-point victory will see them clinch the competition’s South African Shield for a second consecutive season.
# Motorsport: Formula One champions McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, says they will start the new season on the defensive, as early indications suggest Ferrari and Mercedes are the teams to beat. McLaren is chasing their third successive constructors’ title, with Britain’s Lando Norris aiming for a second consecutive drivers’ championship. Stella says they will bring some small aerodynamic updates to the first race, the Australian Grand Prix, and continue to work on important issues such as reliability.
# And tennis: 2023 champion Daniil Medvedev has advanced to his third Dubai Open semifinals after defeating American Jenson Brooksby. The third-seeded Russian will face in-form Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime for a place in the final after he beat Czech eighth seed Jiri Lehecka. Another Russian, Andrey Rublev, maintained his unbeaten record against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. He will take on Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, who matched his run to the semifinals last year by ousting Czech sixth seed Jakub Mensik.
