Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, lots of cricket news from the T20 World Cup: 2024’s finalist, South Africa, got their campaign off to a winning start, beating Canada by 57 runs in Ahmedabad, India. Captain Aiden Markram’s 59 off 32 balls and David Miller’s unbeaten 39 propelled the Proteas to 213 for four. Navneet Dhaliwal’s impressive 64 from 49 balls was in vain then, for Canada could only manage 156 for eight. Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets. South Africa’s next encounter in Group D is against Afghanistan tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council has confirmed that Pakistan’s fixture against India will go ahead as scheduled on Sunday. The Pakistani government last week directed its team to boycott the Group A contest to show solidarity with Bangladesh, who were replaced in the tournament by Scotland after their refusal to tour India over safety concerns. The ICC says all parties involved are committed and purposeful in their aspirations to serve the best interests of the game with integrity, neutrality and cooperation.
And Italy is sweating over the fitness of captain Wayne Madsen after he dislocated his shoulder during their first group match against Pakistan. The 42-year-old fell heavily in the fourth over of his country’s debut match, which they lost by three wickets. They next play Nepal in Mumbai, India, on Thursday, before meeting England in Kolkata on Monday and the West Indies at the same venue on the 19th. Madsen is a former South African hockey international and a stalwart of county cricket with Derbyshire.
# On to motorsport: Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso feels ready to compete at the highest level, but is uncertain about his long-term future in Formula One. The 44-year-old Spaniard last won a Grand Prix in 2013 with Ferrari. He took his titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006. Alonso, who joined Aston Martin in 2023, says despite being the oldest driver in F1, he remains fully motivated after a record 425 starts:
# And finally, Olympics: Two-time world champion Lindsey Vonn says she has no regrets. The American alpine skiing superstar crashed and broke her leg in her pursuit of Olympic gold at the Winter Games in Italy. The 41-year-old, who was competing while dealing with a ruptured ACL she suffered a week earlier, crashed out early in her run during the women’s downhill competition. She has now suffered a complex tibia fracture, which will require multiple surgeries. Vonn says knowing she stood there having a chance to win was a victory in and of itself.
