Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with lots of cricket news: Quinton de Kock starred with the bat as South Africa defeated the West Indies by seven wickets in Centurion, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-match T20 series. Shimron Hetmyer scored 75 as the visitors posted 221 for four. Then De Kock, playing in his first T20 at home in almost three years, scored 115, and shared a second-wicket partnership of 162 with Ryan Rickelton. The Proteas won with 15 balls to spare. The third and final match will be played at the Wanderers tomorrow.
South African under-19 women’s captain Kayla Reyneke is expected to make her debut for the senior team after being included in the squad for the three-match T20 home series against Pakistan. Other players in the group include captain Laura Wolvaardt, Chloé Tryon, Marizanne Kapp, Dané van Niekerk, Masabata Klaas and Ayabonga Khaka. Top-order batters Lara Goodall and Faye Tunnicliffe are part of the one-day squad for the three matches that will follow the T20s. The first T20 is scheduled for Potchefstroom on 10 February.
Meanwhile, allrounder Sophie Molineux will take over as captain of Australia’s women’s team when Alyssa Healy retires. Twenty-eight-year-old Molineux will lead the team in next month’s T20 home series against India, and will become captain of all three formats from the Test and one-day tour of the Caribbean in March. She made her debut for Australia in 2018 and played three Tests, 11 ODIs and 38 T20s since. Molineux also plays for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash, and for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League.
# On to netball: South Africa defeated England 52-48 in the opening game of the three-match series in Johannesburg. The Roses took an early 6-3 lead, but the Proteas got back into the game, edging ahead 16-12. The hosts extended their advantage to 29-25 before half-time. England fought back to lead 39-38 heading into the final stages of the match, however South Africa capitalised on the visitors’ unforced errors to seal the victory. The two sides meet in the second game of the series tomorrow.
# And, tennis: The CEO of Tennis Australia, Craig Tiley, says there’s a fine line between player promotion and privacy. He reacted to female players complaining about a lack of privacy after American Coco Gauff’s meltdown in the players’ area was shown on television. She smashed her racquet after losing in the quarterfinal, thinking it was a private moment. Tiley says although TV cameras are set up in places like the players’ gym, other areas such as the locker room, coaches room and recovery rooms are off-limits.
