Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, cricket: Pretoria Capitals booked their place in the final of the SA20 when they beat Sunrisers Eastern Cape by seven wickets in Qualifier One at Kingsmead in Durban. Bryce Parsons took three wickets to restrict Sunrisers to 170 for seven. In reply, Dewald Brevis scored an unbeaten 75 with Parsons making 60 as Capitals won with nine balls to spare. Sunrisers will have a second chance to reach the final when they face the winners of today’s eliminator between Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings.
More cricket news: India’s women will visit South Africa in April for a five-match T20 series against the Proteas, which will be used as preparation for the World Cup starting in England on 12 June. The matches will be played in Durban, Johannesburg and Benoni. This will only be the third T20 series between the two countries and the first since 2023. Cricket South Africa’s director of national teams and high performance, Enoch Nkwe, says the tour is exactly what the Proteas need before the World Cup.
# Rugby: The Springbok Women will host the USA Women’s Eagles for the first time in a historic two-match Test series in Johannesburg and Pretoria in July. The matches will open the day’s action when the men’s Springboks kick off their Nations Championship campaign. The Bok Women will also host New Zealand’s Black Ferns in September. Springbok Women’s head coach Swys de Bruin says their objective is to play as many top-ten teams as possible in the new World Cup cycle.
Meanwhile, eight stadiums across Australia have been confirmed as host venues for next year’s World Cup. Sydney’s Olympic Stadium will be the centrepiece of the tournament. The 80-thousand-seat venue will host the final on 13 November, both semi-finals, the third-place playoff, two quarter-finals and two pool matches. Sydney’s Soccer Stadium will also play a key role, staging three pool games and two round of 16 fixtures. The tournament kicks off in Perth with the opening match on 1 October.
# And tennis: Former British prodigy Emma Raducanu plans to re-evaluate her game after being ousted in the second round of the Australian Open. She lost in straight sets to local player Anastasia Potapova in Melbourne. Raducanu burst on the scene when she won the US Open in 2021 as a teenage qualifier, but couldn’t win a tournament since. She dropped from tenth in the world rankings to the current 29th, curtailed by several long-term injuries. Raducanu admits she’s not playing the style of tennis she wants.
