Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we have golf: Team Europe managed to withstand a final-day fightback from Team US to clinch back-to-back Ryder Cup titles with a 15-13 victory at Bethpage Black in New York. Shane Lowry found a final-hole birdie to claim a half point against Russell Henley and ensure that Team Europe would retain the trophy. Tyrrell Hatton’s tie with Collin Morikawa handed Luke Donald’s side the outright victory, a first on American soil since 2012. Donald says he couldn’t be prouder of his team’s fighting spirit:
Meanwhile, five-time major champion Rory McIlroy has criticised the New York crowd for what he described as unacceptable and abusive behaviour at the event. A raucous crowd hurled personal insults towards the European players the entire weekend while McIlroy’s wife, Erica, had beer thrown on her. McIlroy says this behaviour should never be accepted in the sport:
# Rugby: New Zealand will be without Beauden Barrett and Ethan de Groot for the final Rugby Championship fixture against Australia in Perth on Saturday. Barrett will be replaced by Damian McKenzie, while De Groot’s replacement remains unclear, but it seems likely it will be Tamaiti Williams.
# Cricket: South Africa secured a four-wicket victory over Pakistan in Colombo in their final preparation match for the upcoming Women’s World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Pakistan batted first and was bowled out for 229 in 46 overs, with Ayabonga Khaka and Masabata Klass taking two wickets each for South Africa. In reply, Suné Luus and Anneke Bosch scored half-tons and added a 100-run partnership for the fourth wicket to help the Proteas Women to victory with almost ten overs to spare. South Africa opens its World Cup campaign against England on Saturday.
# And finally, motorsport: Spanish Ducati rider Marc Márquez secured his seventh MotoGP world championship at the Japanese Grand Prix, his first since 2019. The 32-year-old finished second behind his teammate Francesco Bagnaia in Motegi to clinch the title, with Honda’s Joan Mir in third. South Africa’s Brad Binder finished 12th. Márquez has 11 victories this season and stretched his championship lead to 201 points over his brother, Álex:
