Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: Defending champions South Africa maintained their perfect start to the Junior World Championship by beating hosts Georgia 33-5 in Tbilisi. The Junior Springboks scored five tries to one, with Siphosethu Mnebelele crossing the line twice. Argentina, Australia, England, France, New Zealand and Wales also made it back-to-back wins in the second-round pool matches. Junior Boks coach Kevin Foote praised his team’s composure and maturity against a physical Georgian side:
More rugby: England’s head coach, Steve Borthwick, has included George Furbank, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and George Martin in the starting line-up for tomorrow’s Nations Championship opener against South Africa at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. The trio returns to action following lengthy Test absences. Jamie George will captain the side, with regular captain Maro Itoje rested. In-form 21-year-old Henry Pollock is on the bench. Borthwick says playing South Africa at Ellis Park is one of the great Tests in world rugby and an opportunity they are excited to embrace.
# Cricket: Proteas Women coach, Mandla Mashimbyi, says valuable lessons were learnt from their defeat to England in the T20 World Cup semifinal. England defeated South Africa by 40 runs and will face six-time champions Australia in Sunday’s final at Lord’s. Mashimbyi says there were plenty of positives and the work they put in now must ensure they are ready when they get an opportunity to play in a World Cup again:
# Soccer: Two-time champions Spain cruised into the World Cup last 16 with a convincing 3-0 victory over Austria in Los Angeles. Two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and one from Pedro Porro secured the victory for the European champions. Spain’s win is their first in the knockout rounds of the World Cup since their triumph in South Africa in 2010. In Toronto, Portugal came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1, with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and a 94th-minute winner from Goncalo Ramos. Portugal will face Spain in Dallas on Monday.
# And tennis: Poland’s Iga Swiatek continued her Wimbledon title defence with a straight sets victory over Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic to reach the third round. Former champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan eased past American Caty McNally, while last year’s finalist, Amanda Anisimova, battled past American compatriot Sofia Kenin. In the men’s draw, Germany’s Alexander Zverev dispatched Frenchman Valentin Royer. Italian Matteo Berrettini defeated Arthur Fils of France, while Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov beat Czech Jakub Mensik.
