Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with rugby: Sharks head coach JP Pietersen says he is proud of the effort shown by his players, despite being thrashed 54-0 by a formidable All Blacks side in Durban last night. The hosts, with some young players in the squad, approached the match with an attacking mindset despite being in the early stages of their pre-season. Pietersen admits his side were unable to match the visitors’ skills:
Meanwhile, the All Blacks legend Ma’a Nonu’s lone response to his former teammate’s haka is still reverberating throughout the rugby world. The 44-year-old veteran of 103 Tests played for the Sharks last night. Everyone at King’s Park, including the players, stood in awe when Nonu showed the opponents the ultimate sign of Maori respect, accepting the visitors’ challenge on behalf of the hosts. Although the All Blacks ultimately won, Nonu’s reply will probably be remembered more so than the score.
# Cricket: Spinner Björn Fortuin will captain the Proteas in the T20 tri-series in Namibia, as well as a one-day series. South Africa and its co-hosts for next year’s one-day World Cup, Namibia and Zimbabwe, will play in the capital of Windhoek from the 28th, followed by three ODI’s against the hosts. The brothers of two Proteas are set to make their debuts for the national team – ace bowler Marco Jansen’s twin, Duan, and Corbin Bosch’s brother, Eathan. Coach Shukri Conrad wants to give younger players some international experience.
# Netball: Cape Town narrowly defeated Tshwane 56-55 to win the National Championships at Stellenberg High School in Cape Town. Sigi Burger scored in the dying seconds to secure a last-gasp victory for the home team. Mangaung earned a narrow 45-44 victory over Johannesburg in the third-place play-off. Meanwhile, in the Under 21-division, defending champions Johannesburg claimed a 52-38 victory over Tshwane. Cape Town captain Sian Moore is proud of the fighting spirit they showed:
# And tennis: World number two Elena Rybakina defeated Japan’s Naomi Osaka to reach the Canadian Open semifinals in Toronto. The Kazakhstani will face Coco Gauff after the American received a walkover, following Belinda Bencic of Switzerland’s withdrawal due to a hip injury. The other semifinal will see Poland’s Iga Swiatek take on Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. In Montreal, defending champion Ben Shelton defeated Czech player Jakub Mensik, while his American compatriot Learner Tien defeated Spaniard Daniel Merida to reach the semifinals.
