Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: South Africa is on the verge of qualification for the Super Eights in the T20 World Cup, after beating Bangladesh by four runs in New York. A 79-run fifth-wicket stand between Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller helped the Proteas recover to 113 for six after losing four early wickets. In reply, Keshav Maharaj claimed three wickets as Bangladesh reached 109 for seven. Player of the match Klaasen says this performance will give them confidence:
# Olympics: South African long-distance runner Gerda Steyn is turning her attention to the Games in Paris after successfully defending her Comrades Marathon title in a new record time on Sunday. This followed her victory in the Two Oceans in April. Steyn expects a tough race in the Olympics marathon on the tenth of August. Her best time over the distance of 42.195-kilometres is two hours-24 minutes while defending Olympic champion Peres Jepshirchir of Kenya recently set a new world record of two-hours-16-minutes-16 seconds.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says tonight’s World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein is a must-win. This will be South Africa’s third meeting against the Warriors in the preliminaries for the global competition, equalling the number they have played against Burkina Faso, their most frequent opponent. Broos says he has confidence in his team to get over the line:
More soccer news: Britain’s Prince William had a special message from his youngest when he bid England’s men’s team farewell before its departure for Germany for Euro 2024. William, the president of the Football Association, met the 26 players at St George Park to present them with their shirts. They play their first match against Serbia on Sunday, followed by encounters against Denmark and Slovenia. William says six-year-old Prince Louis wanted him to tell the players they should eat twice as much as normal to prepare for the competition.
# And finally, rugby: Flanker Tom Curry has been named in England’s squad for their tour of Japan and New Zealand despite an injury-wrecked season. Seven players from Premiership champions Northampton are also included. Curry is part of a 36-strong group that departs Britain tomorrow despite playing just 34 minutes since last year’s World Cup. The 25-year-old recovered from a hip injury in time to make a brief appearance in Sale’s Premiership play-off semi-final defeat by Bath on 1 June.
