# We start with rugby: SA Rugby has confirmed that players based in Europe, the UK, and Ireland will not be considered for the Springboks’ first Test of the season against Wales at Twickenham later this month. This includes Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, who plays for French club Racing92. The team has qualified for the Top 14 play-offs, with the semifinals on the same weekend as the Wales Test. Bulls players will also not be considered because of their involvement in the United Rugby Championship play-offs.
# Tennis: Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev to win his first French Open and third Grand Slam title. The 21-year-old outlasted the German 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, to become the youngest player to win a men’s major singles title on all three surfaces, namely grass, hardcourt and clay. Alcaraz, who arrived in Paris having not competed for three weeks due to a right arm injury, ranks his French Open title as his proudest Grand Slam win so far:
# Cricket: India beat Pakistan by six runs to secure their second victory of the T20 World Cup. Pakistan seamers Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah claimed three wickets each as India were bowled out for just 119. In reply, Jasprit Bumrah’s three wickets in four overs proved decisive as Pakistan finished on 113 for seven. India now sits top of the table in Group A, while Pakistan is in fourth place and yet to win. Bumrah says the victory was a team effort:
# Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler has become just the second player after Tiger Woods to win the Players Championship, Masters, and Memorial in the same year. The 27-year-old American ended with a final round two-over 74 to win the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament by one stroke, capturing his fifth title of the season. American Collin Morikawa finished second ahead of Canada’s Adam Hadwin.
# And finally, motorsport: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen returned to winning ways by claiming victory in an action-packed Canadian Grand Prix. He overcame rain, multiple safety car periods, and restarts, to win ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Mercedes’ George Russell. This is Verstappen’s sixth win in nine races this season and he has extended his championship lead over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to 56 points. He says winning such a challenging race is very satisfying:
