# We start with rugby: There are eight world champion Junior Springboks in the Western Province squad for the Currie Cup. Province get their campaign underway with a North-South clash against the Bulls in Cape Town on Saturday. Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton is joined by teammates Xola Nyali, Wandile Mlaba, Oliver Reid, Herman Lubbe, Siya Ndlozi, Dominic Malgas and Gino Cupido in the senior squad, although they will only be eligible for selection from next week, having returned home this week.
Meanwhile, British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell has made seven changes to the side that will face Australia in the second Test in Melbourne on Saturday. Bundee Aki, Ollie Chessum and Andrew Porter come into the starting lineup, replacing Sione Tuipulotu and Joe McCarthy, who are both injured, and Ellis Genge who moves to the bench. Owen Farrell, Jac Morgan, James Ryan, and Blair Kinghorn have been added to the bench. The coach says team selection is always difficult:
# Cricket: The six franchise teams in the SA20 are beginning to take shape for the fourth season, starting on the 26th of December. The Proteas’ T20 captain, Aiden Markram, is heading for the auction after Sunrisers Eastern Cape didn’t retain their captain of the first three seasons. Former South African captain Faf du Plessis will stay at Joburg Super Kings while defending champions MI Cape Town will have the services of Ryan Rickelton, George Linde, Corbin Bosch and Kagiso Rabada. The auction takes place on 9 September.
# Netball: The Baby Proteas eye a top-three finish at the Under-21 Youth World Cup in Gibraltar, Spain, from 19 to 25 September. The 15-player squad includes captain Phophi Nematangari, Jade Atkins, and Renezia Andrews. With an unbeaten Africa qualifier run and a series win over Jamaica, South Africa faces Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Malawi and Fiji in Pool D. Nematangari is confident her players will perform:
# And tennis: Top seed Taylor Fritz is through to the last 16 of the Washington Open. The American eased past Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic for his first victory on the hard court surface since March. Russia’s Daniil Medvedev rallied past American Reilly Opelka, while Australia’s Alex de Minaur beat China’s Yunchaokete Bu. In the women’s draw, there were victories for Greece’s Maria Sakkari and Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya.
