Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: Dylan Sage will return to the Springbok Sevens team for the first time in four years, and Siviwe Soyizwapi for the first time this season, for next weekend’s tournament in Singapore. Head coach Philip Snyman made five changes to the squad that finished sixth in Hong Kong earlier this month, with Tiaan Pretorius, Tristan Leyds and Rosko Specman also recalled. South Africa will face France, Spain and Samoa in Pool B. Snyman says they are ready to compete:
Meanwhile, the Junior Springboks have left for Australia for the Under 20 Rugby Championship taking place in Queensland from next Thursday until the 12th of next month. They will face New Zealand, Australia and Argentina’s young squads at the Sunshine Coast Stadium. The Baby Boks held a camp in Johannesburg to prepare for the tournament, which is the first of two international events they will participate in this year. The annual World Rugby Under-20 championship will be played in the Western Cape in June and July.
# Cricket: The Lions defeated the Titans by eight wickets according to the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method at the Wanderers to make the CSA T20 Challenge final. The match was reduced to 18 overs after a floodlight failure delayed play. Nqaba Peter took four wickets to help restrict the Titans to 131 for nine. In reply, Rassie van der Dussen scored an unbeaten 73 as he led the Lions to victory with 20 balls to spare. The Dolphins and the Warriors take on each other in the other semifinal in Durban tonight.
# Tennis: Fourteen-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal says he will only compete at Roland Garros if he has confidence in his ability to compete well. The Spaniard, who will celebrate his 38th birthday in Paris on the third of June, had been struggling with injuries for over a year. He says if the clay-court Grand Slam tournament was to kick off today, he wouldn’t be able to participate, but still hopes to play there one more time. The tournament starts on the 26th of next month.
# And finally, golf: Four-time major winner, Rory McIlroy, says he is willing to make a return to the PGA Tour policy board. He resigned in November last year, citing concerns over the time and energy he had to commit to the role. The Northern Irishman could replace Webb Simpson, who has reportedly offered his resignation and requested the former world number one take his place. McIlroy says he could help accelerate the progress of merger talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf:
