Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: Irish giants Leinster and Ulster’s qualification for the final of the Champions Cup is said to be positive for the Stormers and the Lions’ chances of reaching the United Rugby Championship playoffs. Leinster is currently fourth in the URC standings and Munster fifth, and both will have to continue preparing on two different fronts. The Lions play Leinster this Saturday and Munster next week, while the Stormers will face Munster this Friday, also in Ireland. The Stormers are currently top of the log and the Lions third.
# Tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner will chase a record-extending sixth consecutive ATP Masters one-thousand crown at the Italian Open. He will begin his campaign against Alex Michelsen or Sebastian Ofner. Sinner also has Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton, and Daniil Medvedev in his half of the draw. In the bottom half of the draw, six-time champion Novak Djokovic will make his return after more than six weeks out and will start against Marton Fucsovics or a qualifier. Lorenzo Musetti and Casper Ruud are also in Djokovic’s draw.
# Cricket: Mumbai Indians have kept their slim Indian Premier League play-off hopes alive with a six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants. Nicholas Pooran scored 63 runs off just 21 balls as Super Giants posted 228 for five. In reply, Rohit Sharma top-scored with 84 off 44 balls, and Ryan Rickelton contributed 83 to lead Mumbai to their highest successful run chase in IPL history with eight balls to spare. Mumbai is now six points off the top four with four matches to play.
# Soccer: The pendulum has swung Arsenal’s way in the race for the Premier League title after Manchester City played to a 3-all draw against Everton last night. Pep Guardiola’s side led 1-0 at halftime through Jérémy Doku. In the second half, Everton fought back with substitute Thierno Barry scoring twice, either side of a Jake O’Brien header. Erling Haaland pulled one back, and Doku’s 97th-minute equaliser salvaged a point for City. Arsenal now know three wins from their final three matches will secure a first title in 22 years.
# And golf: US Golf Association CEO Mike Whan says it’s highly unlikely that 15-time major champion, Tiger Woods, will play at either the US Open or US Senior Open. The 50-year-old is reportedly receiving treatment in Switzerland after being charged with driving under the influence following a car crash in Florida in March. Whan says what Woods is going through is much bigger than the game. The US Open takes place at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, in June.
