# The GOOD Party says South Africa has a crime, gangsterism and violence crisis that is terrorising communities. The party says the mass shooting at a tavern in Shoba Informal Settlement in Olievehoutbosch, Centurion in which five people were killed, is devastating. GOOD Secretary-General, Brett Herron, says South Africa’s cannot ignore the pattern that is emerging. The mass shootings are most prevalent in apartheid era townships where people are forced to live in ghetto like conditions:
# The ATM is calling on the police and the Ministry of Police to immediately launch a 72-hour manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators of the Choba informal settlement mass shooting. Five people were killed at a tavern in Olievenhoutbosch in Centurion on Friday night. The ATM’s spokesperson, Zama Ntshona says the fact that approximately ten armed individuals could storm into a public venue and indiscriminately open fire, without uttering a word, is a direct threat to public safety and national security:
# The Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has confirmed that case of foot-and-mouth disease in Metsimaholo Local Municipality. It says the source of the outbreak is linked to feedlot in one of the neighbouring provinces. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the Free State to two. The department says the affected farm has been placed under quarantine, and all farms within a ten-kilometer radius have been notified and place under precautionary quarantine until surveillance is completed.
# At least 34 people are dead and several still missing after a tourist boat with 53 people on board capsized in Vietnam during bad weather. The incident took place in Ha Long Bay in the north of the country. Most of the passengers were Vietnamese families visiting from the capital Hanoi. Heavy rain has been hindering the search for survivors, but at least 11 people have been pulled from the water alive. The bodies of at least eight children were recovered so far. Ha Long Bay attracts millions of tourists annually and is a Unesco World Heritage site.
And now some sport news:
# Rugby: On a night where Van der Merwe featured four times on the Springbok scoresheet, Rassie Erasmus’ warriors capped the first phase of their international season with a comprehensive 55-10 win over Georgia in Mbombela. Debutant Marnus van der Merwe scored two tries and was matched by his namesake, winger Edwill. The Boks scored a total of nine tries with Boan Venter, Canan Moodie, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Damian Willemse and Handre Pollard adding the rest. The Springboks now have a three-week break before the opening test in the Rugby Championship on 16 August at Ellis Park.
# Finally, soccer: South Africa last night defeated Senegal 4-1 on penalties in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group quarterfinal match at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco. Following 120 minutes of goalless football, Andile Dlamini rose to the occasion for Desiree Ellis’ side as she saved two spot-kicks, while Karabo Dhlamini, Tiisetso Makhubela, Gabriela Salgado and Bambanani Mbane all held their nerve to clinch victory in the shootout. Banyana Banyana have now progressed to the semifinals, where they will take on nine-time African champions Nigeria on Tuesday. The other semifinal match will feature hosts Morocco and Ghana on Tuesday.
