# The ANC has welcomed the ruling by the International Court of Justice ordering Israel to take measures to prevent and punish direct incitement of genocide in its war in Gaza. ICJ president Joan Donoghue emphasised that Israel must refrain from any acts that could fall under the Genocide Convention, and ensure that its troops do not commit any genocidal acts in Gaza. The ANC’s secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating that justice has been served:
The court also acknowledged the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Donoghue stated that South Africa has the right standing to bring a case of genocide against Israel. She says the court concludes a prima facie case, indicating there is sufficient evidence to proceed:
# The Public Servants Association has expressed deep dismay over the South African Reserve Bank’s decision to keep the repo rate unchanged at 8.25-percent. According to the PSA, despite the ongoing struggles of public-sector employees and the nation, the Monetary Policy Committee missed an opportunity to alleviate financial burdens by reducing interest rates. The association warns of a potential deeper financial crisis, citing the alarming rate of asset repossession and the middle class’s struggle with rising interest rates. They contend a rate reduction is crucial for economic growth and stability.
# The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services, in collaboration with partners, are facing an intensified situation near Bain’s Kloof Pass. As the fire on the mountain slope gains momentum, 124 personnel, three helicopters, and 12 firefighting vehicles are actively working to protect properties. Homeowners are advised to take precautions. The municipality’s spokesperson, Jo-Anne Otto says commuters using Bain’s Kloof Pass should be aware of potential closures due to water bombing, urging them to explore alternative routes for safety:
# Tennis: Russian Daniil Medvedev booked his place in the men’s final of the Australian Open when he beat Alexander Zverev of German in a hard-fought semifinal. Third-seeded Medvedev came back from two sets down to win in five sets. Medvedev, who also reached the final in 2021 and ’22, says he hopes it will be third time lucky for him when he faces Jannik Sinner on Sunday. The Italian unexpectedly beat ten-time champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the other semifinal to reach his first Grand Slam final.
