# EFF leader Julius Malema has denied claims that he endangered lives by firing a shot in the air during the EFF’s fifth birthday celebrations in 2018 at Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe Stadium. Malema and co-accused Adriaan Snyman are on trial in East London Regional Court for Malema’s alleged firing of what appeared to be a rifle. He argued that no attendees opened a case against him and denies claims of intimidation:
# The Electoral Commission has confirmed an attempted unauthorised entry at its Gauteng provincial warehouse yesterday. Unknown individuals interfered during material transport from a local storage site in Johannesburg, attempting entry upon arrival at the warehouse. No items were taken. The Commission commends the swift response of the South African Police Service, ensuring staff safety and material integrity. Police are investigating, and a case has been registered.
# Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has reported a fatal elephant attack involving a respected professional hunter, Gert van der Walt on Monday. Van der Walt, who had a trophy hunting permit issued after the elephant was declared a problem-causing animal, was fatally injured during the hunt. Spokesperson Romeo Muyunda says Van der Walt was was always available when the Ministry needed him, especially in resolving human-wildlife conflict incidences:
# Malaysia has revealed it intentions to join the BRICS group of emerging economies. Prime minister Anwar Ibrahim told Chinese media his country will join the group, which has recently expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates. Anwar announced that Malaysia is in the process to complete the formal procedures. This announcement comes as Chinese premier Li Qiang visits Malaysia to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations.
# Tennis: Japan’s Naomi Osaka was one of four Grand Slam champions granted a wildcard into the main draw for next month’s women’s singles at Wimbledon. The 26-year-old, former world number one and twice winner of both the Australian and US Opens, will be playing in the main draw of Wimbledon for the first time in five years after becoming a mother. Former Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki, 2018 Wimbledon champion, Germany’s Angelique Kerber, and home favourite Emma Raducanu received the other wildcards.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-98-cents and the euro at 19-rand-32-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-88-cents and Bitcoin trades at 64-thousand-929-dollars-19-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-326-dollars-86-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 85-dollars-58-cents a barrel.
