# Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has announced that the president and the speaker of the National Assembly will be elected on Friday. Zondo will oversee the first sitting of the National Assembly, where members will take their oaths and elect a speaker. The National Assembly in Cape Town will witness the swearing-in of members of Parliament. According to the Constitution, a president must be elected within 14-days of election results being declared. Members of the National Council of Provinces will be sworn in the following day.
Meanwhile, Parliament has reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional responsibilities despite the MK Party’s boycott of the first National Assembly sitting and challenge to election results. It confirmed arrangements are underway for all elected members, excluding those from MK, to attend the sittings and associated activities in Cape Town. Parliament’s spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, dismissed the party’s claims of unconstitutionality, citing that Parliament is legally obligated to facilitate the sitting:
# Israel’s telecoms regulator extended the ban on Al Jazeera’s operations for another 45 days, citing security concerns. A Tel Aviv court upheld the initial 35-day ban, which ended Saturday. The Supreme Court described the ban as precedent-setting and demanded government justification by 8 August. The news network plans to appeal, denying it incites violence. Israel’s Communications minister Shlomo Karhi claims Al Jazeera endangers national security and may extend the closure further.
# Rugby: Bulls loose forward Celimpilo Gumede received his first Springbok call-up today and immediately got stuck into the action at the team’s afternoon session at the training camp in Pretoria. This follows the release of double World Cup-winning wing Cheslin Kolbe, who will undergo a medical examination for a knee niggle. The team that will face Wales in the opening Test of the season at Twickenham next weekend will be named next week Tuesday, with the squad set to depart for London the next evening.

Gold sells at two-thousand-303-dollars-57-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 80-dollars-33-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Two elderly men, aged 75 and 92-years, have been remanded in custody for the murder of an 80-year-old man during a 4 am fight at an old-age home in Brits, North West. Police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone says the incident occurred when the victim allegedly bumped into one of the suspects, who then hit him with his crutches.
