# The Public Protector finds courts are failing gender-based violence victims
# NotInMyName calls for the protection of democracy towards the seventh administration
# And cricket: Rahul Dravid won’t stay on as India’s coach after the T20 World Cup
# The Public Protector has found the Department of Justice lacking in measures to protect gender-based violence victims. Kholeka Gcaleka reported that 38 courts investigated are inefficiently run, failing to provide proper protection orders and solve cases, leading to increased GBV incidents. Gcaleka also notes poor filing systems and language barriers contribute to poor service delivery. She calls for better assistance for victims seeking protection orders:
Meanwhile, civil rights movement NotInMyName International calls for the protection of democracy in the seventh administration. They expressed concern over a predicted three to five-percent drop in female representation in the National Assembly. They urge political parties to uphold gender representation policies and prioritise including women, especially black women. The movement’s Themba Masango urges civil society to monitor coalition talks to ensure citizens’ interests are not overlooked for political gain:
# A newborn baby found dumped in London in freezing conditions earlier this year has two siblings who were also abandoned in similar circumstances in previous years. The girl, named Baby Elsa by hospital staff, was wrapped in a towel and left inside a shopping bag when she was found by a dog walker in January. DNA testing has since shown she has a brother and a sister, known as Baby Harry and Baby Roman, who were discovered in the same area in 2017 and 2019, respectively. London’s Metropolitan Police is working to trace the identities of the parents.
# Cricket: Rahul Dravid announced his departure as head coach of India after the current T20 World Cup. The former international batter says he will not re-apply for the position which was advertised by governing body BCCI last month. Fifty-one-year-old Dravid led India to the finals of the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup last year, losing to Australia on both occasions. His country hasn’t won any international tournament since 2013. India’s T20 World Cup campaign starts against Ireland tomorrow.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-66-cents and the euro at 20-rand-27-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-82-cents and Bitcoin trades at 69-thousand-258-dollars-8-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-336-dollars-65-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 77-dollars-6-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Founding director of the Centre for the Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest at Stellenbosch University, Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, has been awarded the prestigious Templeton Prize. It recognises her contributions to scholarship on forgiveness and repairing trauma after violence. Gobodo-Madikizela says the prize will fund new research projects, postgraduate students, and postdoctoral fellows amid reduced funding. She plans to donate eight-million-rand to Stellenbosch University. The Templeton Prize is the second prestigious award for Gobodo-Madikizela, who received the 2020 Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship award.
